How the Calculator Works

The calculator uses the ecological **energy transfer formula**, often simplified by the 10% rule:

Energy at Higher Level = Energy at Lower Level × (Efficiency / 100)
  

Most ecosystems transfer about **10%** of energy from one trophic level to the next, but the efficiency can vary depending on species and environment.

Example

Energy at Producers = 10,000 kJ  
Efficiency = 10%  

Possible Output:
Energy at Primary Consumers = 1,000 kJ
